ABC Family actor comes out as gay via Twitter

By Anna Peirano

Actor Matt Dallas, who made it big with the former ABC Family show "Kyle XY" has revealed that he is gay, and engaged.

Following the trend of many stars who have come out quietly rather than with a big announcement, Dallas sent a tweet on Sunday night which read "Starting off the year with a new fiancé, @bluehamilton. A great way to kick off 2013!"

There has been speculation about the 30-year-old actor for a while, but this is the first time Dallas has publicly made any reference to his sexuality.

In early 2009, he was linked to actor Jonathan Bennett. Dallas and Hamilton were first spotted together later that year in September of 2009.

"Gone are the days of the 'Yep, I'm Gay' magazine covers," notes HuffPost Gay Voices Editor-at-Large and SiriusXM host Michelangelo Signorile, "with celebrities making a spectacle of coming out, and thus focusing on the fact that they were in the humiliating and painful gay closet... The closet isn't going away any time soon. But one step toward dismantling it among public figures it to make it a difficult and embarrassing place to be. From the looks of the latest celebrity self-outings, that's perhaps starting to take hold."
