Washington Attorney General and his wife disagree on topic of marriage equality

By Malissa Rogers

Washington’s gay and lesbian couples have celebrated the legalization of same-sex marriage since voters approved the marriage equality bill in November. However, one powerful heterosexual married couple is having a public debate over the issue.

Attorney General Rob McKenna of Washington State and his wife, Marilyn, are in disagreement over the right for gay people to marry. Although Rob McKenna supports the rights of same-sex domestic partnerships, he publicly opposed the passage of Referendum 74, the voter approved bill that legalized same-sex marriage within the state. But the same can’t be said for his wife.

“I believe that being pro-gay marriage is completely consistent with being a Republican too. It’s a matter of personal choice that the government has no right to interfere in,” Marilyn wrote in an email to the Seattle Times.

As many gay couples throughout the state lined up to get married  and obtain legal marriage licenses for the first time, Marilyn took to Twitter to express how she felt about marriage equality in the state she calls home. “Marriage is a blessing, not a political issue. We do well to remember that everyone benefits when couples commit.”

The difference in opinion between the McKennas reflects a similar divide throughout the country; many believe in the freedom to marry, while others believe that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Regardless of opinions, Marilyn expressed her opinion in a second email to the Seattle Times, “Both the government and the Republican Party need to get the hell out of people’s bedrooms and get a life!'"
