If for no other reason, the legalization of same-sex marriage in Illinois would help the growth of the economy. The Illinois Restaurant Association (IRA) has expressed its support for same-sex marriage and is pushing Illinois House members to pass SB10, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.
IRA president Sam Toia announced his support on October 10. “As owners of small and large businesses, our members know the importance of treating all customers equally. It’s the right thing to do—and it’s good for business,” Toia said according to Illinois Unites.
Toia noted a study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law which shows that the legalization of same-sex marriage would bring in $103 million to Illinois consumerism within three years of the passing of the bill. The study also suggested that the increase in the wedding industry and other related fields would open up an estimated 281 jobs.
“As a businessman, I worry that Illinois is falling behind,” Toia commented.
The Illinois Restaurant Association does not stand alone in their support of same-sex marriage, many faith leaders and members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation also endorse the legislation.
