Architectural Boom in New York

Zion, Mecca, Disney Land, the Bible Belt — you name it, whether real or imaginary, there’s a utopia for it, and soon you can add BOOM to the list: an LGBT paradise. The community development organization, BOOM Communities, recently announced plans to create an all-in-one LGBT affirming complex in New York City.

Based out of Los Angeles, BOOM Communities takes on chic architecture projects on a large scale. With “Live the life you want” as their motto, BOOM strives to foster the innovation of modern neighborhoods that are both aesthetically inspiring and societally progressive. BOOM’s current projects include sprawling communities in Malaga, Spain and Palm Springs, California.

For the $250 million residential development in Palm Springs, BOOM enlisted the geniuses of 10 architecture firms for the design of its neighborhoods and amenities. The think-tank — which included such architectural power-houses as Diller Scofidio + Renfro, HWKN, Lot-Ek, Rudin Donner, and J Mayer H —came out with modern, ecofriendly designs for curved waves for apartments, protruding boxes for an event center, and slick open planes for its “rooftop mist disco and market.”

The gay utopia in the heart of the desert is set to begin construction next year and gives New Yorkers a hint at what to expect for their own future BOOM community. Though the project isn’t set for completion till 2018, BOOM is hard at work in the preliminary stages, conducting feasibility studies, seeing how the BOOM vision fits in the metropolis.
