Carlos Melia

What do you do?

I am what people call a multi-facetic of the Tourism and Hospitality World. For some a Jetsetter, for others a true citizen of the world, now as for me, I am a full core expert and experiential Travel Agent, Blogger, Hospitality and Tourism Niche Marketing Consultant. I have lately added to my list, Wedding Planner. Reason why I am in Buenos Aires all this month, preparing a very high profile wedding here in Argentina, for a couple from overseas. I have established my self over the years as a specialist in Luxury Gay Travel, with the support and trust of international mainstream hospitality and lifestyle brands that believe in my work, following and image.

Why do you do it?

Because it is my passion. Because I grew up as a gipsy moving around the world, crossing time zone and continents. Because I was not born for one corner, the whole world is my native land. Because I think I have a voice and I can help others with what I do. I do not sell travel, I offer travel experiences of a lifetime, and that fills my heart more than my pockets. That is why I do it.

What accomplishment in your career to date are you most proud of?

The one for which most people know me, was the title of Mr. Gay International 2008. But to be honest, now I can say it, this was not the one that made me most proud. I am proud of the recognition given to me by peers and press worldwide, and the loyalty and following of readers and customers of my work and blog. My reputation, I built it myself, networking and creating synergies around the world… and that is what I am most proud of.

Who has made the biggest impact on you in life so far, and why?

My parents. They taught me everything I know and challenged me to always be better and better. They let me go at a very young age, and set me free to fly on my own, always there, watching me in case I fell. To believe in my dreams and pursue them in the most tenacious and ethical way possible. And here I am.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Little Marco Polo

What is something that not a lot of people know about you, but you wish more people could know?

That I work my ass off, ha ha ha. Everyone sees my life as a 365 days a year holiday in full luxury. But not many see the backstage of this whole aspirational life I live. You will see me in four continents in a week, at fourteen different luxury properties, and those who know me, are very well aware I am not bluffing. Sometimes that can be very tiring and challenging. Also, most people don't know that I am a very private and shy person, and sometimes I might come across as antisocial or conceited. Those are only a few of my deeper, darker secrets, ha ha ha.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be?

I would not trade my life with anyone, not even for a minute. First, because I love my life, and second, because I would be too jealous to let anyone have mine. I live my own fantasy, which every single day allows me to live the life of other people. Also my own life is an ongoing life trading‚ crossing time zones, cultures, religions, locations. I live many lives in my own skin.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?

I would play it myself. But I don't think Hollywood is ready for a movie about my life...it would be highly controversial. As my favorite phrase of this week says‚ "Not as much of a saint as your loved ones think, and not as much of a satan as your enemies say."

Where would you go if you had a time machine?

I would go back to France or Italy during the Belle Epoque, or to the old Asia. I am always trying to find a sense of this while I travel around Europe and Asia. Trying to find the bits of the old world, the identity that these days has been destroyed by globalization.

Anything else you would you like to tell our readers?

There is a phrase that I have always thought to be cheesy and stupid. Over and over it goes through my head, and I could not understand why it was not happening to me. And when I was least expecting it‚ it turned into reality. "Be who you are, fight for your dreams‚ and if you really really really want it, even the most unthinkable wish and desire will come true."

Love yourself, believe in yourself and be gentle and fair with those around you, because they are the ones that will elevate you, celebrate you and help you become who you already know deep inside you are.

One day, I dreamt of becoming an influential voice in the world of travel, creating experiences for people and helping them achieve in only 10 or 15 days the memorable story of their lives. You may have the money to travel or not, but either way I will take you on a journey around the world, and that is what I do at www.carlosmeliablog.com every single day. Thank You!
